Dr Noel Baxter, Elected Jan 2011

Dr Tarek Bakht, Elected Jan 2011
Dr tarek Bakht has been a GP in Manchester before taking up a post with Bolton PCT as a GP with special interest in Respiratory Medicine but also leading on heart failure. His role has evolved and he is also involved in primary care quality improvement, practice based commissioning, service development and education. He chairs the Bolton COPD and Heart failure network groups which have had great success in implementation of strategy across Bolton. A big success was the REACH project  (Raising Education and Awareness of COPD in Healthcare ) with the development of the COPD practice development tool. He also has an extensive role in GP education around long term conditions and is soon to launch the ARTP accredited spirometry course. He also works as a GP for 2 days a week and in the chest clinic at Royal Bolton Hospital.

Mrs Jacqui Cooper
Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Executive, Elected 2006
Jacqui worked for 16yrs as a Specialist Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care. Since March 2009 she has managed a COPD team within Principia, Nottm. The main aim of the team is to reduce hospital admissions, provide support and education for patients and health professionals, covering all aspects of COPD including pulmonary rehabilitation and end of life care.  Jacqui has been a trainer for Education for Health for many years, training students on asthma, COPD and Spirometry.  She also successfully completed an MSc in Respiratory Care in 2009.


Dr Steve Holmes
Co-opted member, immediate past chair.  Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Education Lead
Steve is a busy GP and an Associate Director in GP Education in the Severn Deanery. He is co-chair of IMPRESS and a member of the British Asthma Guideline Group Steering Committee. He is also involved in the Programme Board for the National Service Framework for COPD, and is supporting Respiratory Leaders programmes in the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK. Steve is a member of the RCGP College Council and Professional Development Board and has other involvements in GP appraisal and GP performance. He remains passionate about the quality care for patients and the value of primary care

Dr Rupert Jones

and co-opted member as PCRS-UK Research Lead
Dr Rupert Jones is a GP in Plymouth and Clinical Research Fellow at the Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth where he leads the Respiratory Research Unit. He is a GP with special interest in Plymouth PCT. His research interests include psychological factors in COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation, patient education and self-management.

Dr Duncan Keeley
Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Executive, Elected 2006
Duncan is a full time general practitioner and GP trainer in Thame Oxfordshire. He has worked in general medicine and paediatrics in London and Zimbabwe before entering general practice. Duncan has always had a special interest in asthma and respiratory disease. He has acted as an adviser to Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trust on respiratory issues.  Duncan has a special responsibility on the Executive for the oversight of the policy work of the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK in liaison with the Policy Advisor and Executive.

Vikki Knowles, Primary Care Respiratory Society Executive, Elected Jan 2011
Vikki has been a Respiratory Nurse Specialist since 1990. She served on the committee of Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists and is a trainer for Education for Health. She is clinical lead for SW Surrey’s community multidisciplinary respiratory care teams.
In 2009 Vikki was seconded to Asthma UK to provide clinical leadership for the organisation where she was involved in several research projects.
Vikki’s interests include COPD and ILD with particular emphasis on palliative care. She was a member of the COPD Clinical Strategy group looking at end-stage respiratory disease and Asthma. She is currently contributing to the development of a good asthma guide and is leading a pilot project for the Lung Improvement Program looking at chronic disease and self management for people with COPD.


Ruth McArthur
Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Executive, Elected Jan 2009

Ruth McArthur has been a practice nurse with a specialist interest in allergy and respiratory conditions for 20 years. She has been a regional trainer for Education for Health since 1990, originally delivering training in asthma then allergy and latterly COPD.

A former honorary research fellow at Aberdeen University Dept. of General Practice and Primary care Ruth now is National Training Coordinator for Education for Health.

Ruth is a member of BTS/SIGN steering and evidence review groups and an active member of the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK.

Dr Iain Small
Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Executive Chair, Elected Jan 2008
Iain is a General Practitioner in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. He is clinical lead for Grampian Managed Clinical Network for COPD and Chair of the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK Executive. He is a trainer for Education for Health and Honorary Lecturer at the Department of General Practice, University of Aberdeen.

Mrs Carol Stonham, Co-opted member, Chair ,Nurse Committee
Carol qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1986 and has worked in Primary Care in Gloucestershire for 21 years. She has been a member of the PCRS-UK Nurse Committee since it began as the Practice Nurse Working Party, and has been actively involved in development of The Quality Award.
Carol’s clinical role includes direct patient care as well as involvement in research and teaching. She recently successfully completed her MSc in Respiratory Care, and earned a Queen’s Nurse Title.
