COPD National Strategy Primary Care Respiratory Society

COPD National Strategy Quick Reference Guide and slide kit new resources from the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK

We present a Quick Reference Guide to the COPD National Strategy, a web based resource which summarises the key recommendations from the ‘Consultation on a strategy for Services for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in England’ document. This resource aims to be of use to busy clinicians, healthcare managers and commissioners, providing them with a key points summary of sections relevant to primary care in a quick, easy to access format.

A slide set, based on the Quick Reference Guide, is also available to PCRS-UK members only. This aims to support primary care respiratory leaders in their local implementation and education of local colleagues.

The author, Dr Hilary Pinnock, University of Edinburgh and Whitstable Medical Practice, says “The Quick Reference Guide highlights the key points from the Strategy of particular relevance to primary care practice, and provides links to further information, important evidence and practical resources to support implementation. So, if you perform diagnostic spirometry for your practice, review people with COPD, care for those with severe disease, or just see patients who smoke, this resource can link you to information that will help your clinical practice and inform the development of services”.

Other Existing Primary Care Respiratory Society UK COPD Resources

A comprehensive range of COPD resources for primary healthcare professionals has already been developed by the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK, click here to access these resources.

These include ‘First Steps’, a web based resource which aims to encourage individual healthcare professionals and practices to assess where they are now with regard to COPD management and their ‘state of readiness’ to implement the impending COPD National Strategy.

First Steps consists of three separate resources to help you assess your readiness for the new COPD National Strategy
  • How Ready Are You? - a self-assessment knowledge test on some of the clinical aspects of managing COPD, for you and your team members.
  • How Ready Is Your Practice? - a practice assessment tool which provides a checklist of questions and supporting information, intended to prompt discussion and review of the way COPD is managed within your practice. This tool could be used as part of a COPD educational meeting to prompt debate or, alternatively, used to identify areas within your practice that may benefit from review
  • Quick Tips - a series of key, practical first steps when reviewing the way you manage COPD within your practice. This can be used in conjunction with ‘How Ready is Your Practice’, and may be used by an individual or a team reviewing the management of COPD

This series of resources has been produced as a service to primary care by the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK (PCRS-UK) and has been supported by an educational grant from Allen & Hanburys, AstraZeneca UK Ltd and Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd/Pfizer Ltd. The views expressed in the materials are not necessarily those of either the sponsors or the Primary Care Respiratory Society UK (PCRS-UK). © PCRS-UK
