COPD National Strategy
Quick Reference Guide -Introduction

This Quick Reference Guide, published in June 2010, summarises the key recommendations from the Consultation on a strategy for Services for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in England document and aims to be of use to busy clinicians, healthcare managers and commissioners.

The Department of Health has subsequently launched an Outcomes Strategy for COPD and Asthma which is a high level strategy concerned with outcomes.

Key resources to support the points in the quick reference guide are listed in the left hand menu.  In addition, chapter-specific references may be accessed by clicking  the information button at the bottom and left of each page.

COPD
  • Is a major cause of mortality and is likely to be the third biggest cause of death worldwide by 2030
  • Is a major cause of morbidity and healthcare costs
Aims of the National Strategy
The aim of the strategy is to advise how local communities can:
  • prevent people getting COPD
  • understand the risks of having poor lung health
  • secure improvements to the diagnosis of, and care of people with the disease
  • reduce health inequalities
Development of the National Strategy
  • The strategy was developed by the Department of Health with extensive engagement with the NHS, social care and a range of stakeholders.  Stakeholders included voluntary organistions, people with COPD and their carers, industry and other professional groups
  Quality and productivity
  • The quality and productivity challenge requires a strategic approach to managing costs and improving quality of care and requires an approach that covers prevention, early identification, good quality care and end- of-life care.
