Respiratory NetworksNetworks are multi-disciplinary groups that work across traditional boundaries in order to deliver improvements in patient care. They operate in a wide range of disease areas across the UK – and are particularly common in diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Scotland also has many networks which are known as ‘Managed Clinical Networks’. There are many managed clinical networks covering respiratory disease. The Department of Health has signalled that they will be recommending networks as an excellent way to support the implementation of the COPD clinical strategy, and will be encouraging PCTs in England to adopt this model of working across boundaries to deliver integrated care for patients. The Primary Care Respiratory Society UK will be supporting the development of networks and will be providing resources on these pages to help local area groups to start coming together to form networks. At the conference in Milton Keynes in September 2008, a workshop session was held which highlighted the benefits that networks have brought in other disease areas, and the way in which they may be used for respiratory disease. Dr Gregor Smith from Lanarkshire shared his experience of respiratory networks with the workshop group. The full presentation from this session can be found by clicking here. You will notice that there are 2 slides at the end of the presentation showing various documents and resources that may be useful to networks which are just getting started. Keep an eye on this website for more resources and support! |
