Patrick White is a Reader in Primary Care Respiratory Medicine in the School of Population Health and Environmental Sciences, King’s College, London. His current research focuses on service delivery for respiratory disease in primary care. He recently demonstrated the feasibility of recruiting and training COPD patients experienced in pulmonary rehabilitation as volunteer lay health workers to promote pulmonary rehabilitation with a view to a clinical trial. He has completed a feasibility study for a trial of the withdrawal of inhaled corticosteroids in mild and moderate COPD in primary care. He is working with Steph Taylor and Hilary Pinnock and a large team on a trial of a brief psychological intervention to treat anxiety and depression in COPD. Recent studies include a trial of the use of CRP to guide antibiotic prescription for COPD exacerbations, the role of socio-economic deprivation and ethnic variation in the risk of COPD, and the predictors of COPD hospital admissions.
