Gillian Austin qualified as a physiotherapist from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh in 1986. She went on to specialise in the field of respiratory physiotherapy in 1991 where she worked as ITU physiotherapy lead in Liverpool. She moved to Hertfordshire in 1993 and set up one of the first pulmonary rehab programmes in 1995. She obtained an MSc from the University of Hertfordshire in 2010 after carrying out research into the Buteyko breathing technique. She now works for Hertfordshire Community Trust and leads a team covering East and North Herts running PR programmes, respiratory physiotherapy and more recently has been involved in Covid rehab. Her specific areas of interest are pulmonary rehab, dysfunctional breathing, breathlessness management and cough. She is also a qualified Buteyko practitioner/teacher.
