Abstract

Air pollution represents the greatest environmental threat to our health, affecting people of all ages, from children to older adults. It is the leading environmental cause of premature death, contributing to approximately 29,000 deaths annually in the UK. It accounts for 5% of deaths globally, and results in an estimated 3 million workdays lost each year.1,2

In addition to its well-established effects on the lungs, air pollution has far-reaching impacts on health. It increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and premature births. Clean Air Champions is an initiative established to raise awareness among clinicians and allied health professionals, equipping them with the tools to discuss the health impacts of air pollution with their patients and improve health outcomes.3

The project explored strategies and resources to support healthcare professionals in promoting clean air through positive role modelling within their own working environments. A toolkit was developed alongside educational material, following discussions with an urban and biophilic design architect for novel ideas to improve health and wellbeing from a work environment perspective. By implementing Clear Air strategies in the workplace, the aim was to inspire patients to translate these changes in their home environment.

Several challenges were identified, including limited funding and stringent infection prevention and control requirements. Moving forward, we aim to develop a practical guide that can be adopted by any GP surgery wishing to promote clean air while remaining compliant with workplace safety standards.
