Launch of the respiratory Modern Service Framework report
The Taskforce for Lung health has launched a new report ‘Breathing Life into the NHS: Improving outcomes, reducing inequalities, and enabling innovation through a respiratory Modern Service Framework’.
Respiratory conditions affect around one in six people and are the third leading cause of death in the UK. They are a major driver of NHS pressures, particularly in winter, with breathing issues being the leading cause of all emergency admissions. Due to inconsistent delivery of effective interventions, progress has lagged behind comparable conditions. In order to address this, there must be a more proactive model of care focused on prevention, early intervention and community delivery, enabled by a respiratory Modern Service Framework (MSF).
As a member of the Taskforce, PCRS supports the call for government to commit to the development and implementation of a respiratory MSF. Respiratory presents one of the biggest opportunities to improve the nation's health, reduce pressure on the NHS and support economic growth. The evidence already exists, and so does the consensus. Patients, carers, clinicians, researchers, charities, professional bodies and industry are united behind the need for a respiratory MSF.
