Abstract

Abstract:
Introduction:
In response to the SARS‑CoV‑2 pandemic in March 2020 and the mandatory requirement for adherence to infection control measures and patient and staff safety, the Integrated Respiratory Team (IRT) in NHS Dumfries and Galloway developed guideline-based templates to support the specialist nursing team in conducting teleconsultation reviews of people with Sleep disordered breathing, COPD, Asthma, Interstitial lung disease and Oxygen assessment needs.

Methods:
Nine IRT members collaboratively developed the content for the templates based on existing UK guidelines to assist in conducting clinical reviews. In February 2023 semi structured interviews were conducted and recorded in eight of the IRT members using Microsoft teams, then thematically analysed using N VIVO software version 1.7.1.

Results:
Qualitative analysis revealed thirteen themes. The templates were seen as valued, timesaving and considered advantageous in teleconsultation reviews. They supported evidence based, structured, and consistent reviews. They were felt to uphold patient safety, supporting knowledge and skills. IRT members reported the templates had no adverse effect on autonomy, patient professional relationship and person-centred care. They facilitated good MDT working and communication. Two interviewee's reported that the templates supported their NMC code for professional practice, prioritising people, practising effectively, preserving safety, and promoting professionalism and trust. The IRT continue to use and refine them as disease specific guidelines are updated.

Conclusion:
The templates continue to be used across the regional service in both primary and secondary care by the IRT in 2025. The benefit of using the templates has been realised beyond the pandemic. Refinements will be made as evidence- based guidelines are updated. The development of these innovative templates may be of interest and value to other respiratory teams.
