Join us on Wednesday 16th September 2026 - 18:00-19:00, for a live webinar from our Executive Chair Darush Attar-Zadeh, as he shares guidance and support for how we can protect our youth from smoking and vaping.

Supporting patients to quit tobacco remains one of the most cost‐effective interventions a healthcare professional can offer because it delivers immediate and long‐term health gains while reducing the burden on health services. Helping someone stop smoking lowers their risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illness and surgical complications, and these improvements begin within days.

The growing trend for vaping in young people is concerning and it is the role of healthcare professionals to highlight the potential
damage it can cause to young people and support them to quit. Every successful quit attempt prevents future treatment costs, reduces hospital admissions and improves quality of life more than almost any other single intervention. For the time and resources required, few actions deliver such a powerful return for both patients and the healthcare system.

During this webinar Darush will focus on:

  • Prevention, early intervention and treatment for tobacco and vaping use in children and young people
  • The risks of ongoing nicotine dependence
  • Evidence-based cessation options
  • Reinforcing progression toward complete tobacco and eventually nicotine cessation.

Following the presentation from Darush will be a Q&A session chaired by Frances Barrett.

  • Darush Attar-Zadeh

    photo of Darush Attar-ZadehA Clinical Fellow Pharmacist with a keen interest in preventative medicine. Darush has presented at various national and international conferences (including the PCRS, IPCRG, ERS, Clinical Pharmacy Congress). Darush was part of the London Clinical Senate Helping Smokers Quit programme. Darush is a lead for NHS RightBreathe and helps mentor clinicians in 45 PCNs across NW London. In 2019 Darush was awarded PCPA GP Pharmacist runner up. He runs group sessions with patients and clinicians. Darush is the Executive Chair of the PCRS

    Darush enjoys running and raising money for respiratory and cardiac charities. One of his main missions is to reduce health inequalities caused by tobacco and spends a lot of his time teaching in deprived locations across the UK.

  • Frances Barrett

    Frances has worked as a long-term conditions’ nurse specialist in General Practice for over 15 years, the lead a community based pulmonary rehabilitation pilot.
    She is an Associate Lecturer in both the UU and QUB on the specialist practice.
    Frances partnered with a colleague Carole McGrath to create their own training and mentorship company “Barrett & McGrath Education and Mentoring Services Ltd. offering bespoke education, training, facilitation and mentorship to General Practice and beyond. Frances piloted a Respiratory diagnostic and assessment hub in Belfast which attracted significant interest from across the province and a number of similar Hubs have been established on the back of this pilot.
