Professor Robina Kate Coker BSc (Hons), MB BS, PhD, FRCP
Professor of Practice, Respiratory Medicine, Imperial College London.
In 1999 Professor Coker established the British Thoracic Society (BTS) Air Travel Working Party, which published the first UK recommendations on air travel and lung disease in 2002.
Earlier European and North American guidelines had focused on asthma and COPD; the BTS recommendations were the first to give advice for passengers with a variety of respiratory conditions. They were revised in 2004 and 2011. In 2018 the BTS commissioned a Clinical Statement on Air Travel and Lung Disease. Robina chaired the group, and the Clinical Statement was published in Thorax in 2022. In 2019 she was awarded the Individual Bronze Medal by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) for her contribution to airline passenger safety, and in 2021 she received the BTS Meritorious Service Award, partly in recognition of her work on air travel and lung disease. In 2022 she served as President of the Harveian Society, London. She is currently President-Elect for the BTS. Robina’s clinical work focuses on sarcoidosis and interstitial lung disease (ILD) and she is a member of the NHS England Specialised Respiratory Clinical Reference Group (CRG).
