Abstract

There is a lack of published literature on how to support the management of a Children and Young People (CYP) on oxygen therapy in educational settings. When a CYP requires oxygen within such a settings this is typically provided by the CYP’s healthcare team. Clinical staff have limited learning opportunities due to infrequent prescribing of oxygen. Consequently, any training provided can be based on the individual’s own understanding and experience. Clinician's report spending a significant amount of time liaising with educational settings to establish a placement. Clinicians have also reported anecdotally that a CYP’s admission to education can often be delayed or refused due to potential anxiety around medical conditions, and the safety aspects of home oxygen therapy within an educational setting.
This baseline survey provided the impetus to make changes and focused on the broader issues relating to pathway and guidance. A guidance document that outlines the roles and responsibilities of clinical and non-clinical staff with clear safety guidance when a CYP requires oxygen equipment in a school setting. This was created alongside a robust training package for healthcare professionals to train the trainer. The training has been rolled out across London which has given all those involved a better understanding and has enabled some children to now attend school.

Conflicts of interest: I work as a respiratory nurse advisor for a home oxygen supplier in London. I am the founding member of the Paediatric Pan London Oxygen Group. I recognised that there were many common problems associated with managing children on home oxygen therapy. There was an opportunity to develop a paediatric forum to bring knowledge, experience and to share resolutions. Since its inception in 2016, the group has evolved and developed beyond recognition and is now widely regarded as leading in the field of home oxygen therapy. https://pplog.co.uk/
