Abstract

The Asthma Interface role improves asthma outcomes in primary care
The asthma interface role started as a cluster project in 2018 with the objective of improving asthma outcomes in primary care. There is now an asthma interface team which is health board funded.
The Interface nurses run clinics in primary care either with or alongside practice nurses depending on experience. They also run the severe asthma service in secondary care.
They target high saba list patients and assist practices to reduce saba use and increase the use of DPIs. They also encourage the use of asthma plans and manage some complex patients with the support of a Respiratory physician(weekly teams meeting). They also have direct access to DAC and refer patients directly having been optimised.
SABA Item data. Example of 1 cluster used.
2019 2022 Saba reduction Percentage reduction
All Wales Static
Hywel dda 201018 180659 20359 10.6%
Cluster (IAN in situ) 22654 18826 3828 16.89%
Surgery 1 4956 3225 1731 42.3%
Surgery 2 2331 1909 402 19.05%
Surgery 3 5446 4638 828 16.38%
Surgery 4+5 No change ? pharmacy ordering targeted intervention in 2023 data not yet available

Prescribing data proves that where there are IANs in situ there is a reduction in SABA use, increased use of DPIs and more timely access to DAC.
