Health inequalities: Respiratory and mental health VLOG
This VLOG provides an introduction to PCRS's 2025 health inequalities project which focuses on respiratory disease and mental health.
Respiratory disease and mental health are interlinked in many ways, with respiratory conditions often impacting mental wellbeing and vice versa.
NHS England states that people with severe and enduring mental illness are at greater risk of poor physical health and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. This, in combination with the increased cost and medical exposure necessary with lung disease, particularly if the condition is not well controlled, can mean that individuals with respiratory conditions are at a higher risk of experiencing health inequalities.
In this VLOG, Daryl Freeman introduces PCRS's new (2025) health inequalities project:
- Scene setting: How people with respiratory disease can become exposed to health inequalities
- Summary: Overview of the project and what outputs will be made available as part of it
- Call to action: For the primary care setting to support this important group of patients more effectively.
Outputs from this project will include three podcasts and a health inequalities special newsletter, all of which will be released in September 2025.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Training for Clinicians Providing Respiratory Care
Health Inequalities
Health inequalities are an exacerbating factor for respiratory conditions and negatively affect patient outcomes. PCRS aims to raise awareness and offers practical resources to help healthcare professionals to mitigate their impact.
Poverty and Poor Housing
As part of our ongoing work around health inequalities, we have produced a short video resource on poverty and poor housing, and its impact on respiratory health.
