How should tobacco use in primary care be coded and recorded?

Category

The University of Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the RCP are conducting a survey to inform the development of new national data standards for recording tobacco use in electronic patient records.

Practical input is needed from primary care to ensure that the new data standards will work in practice so please take some time to fill in the survey

New national data standards on tobacco use would:-

  • Improve the information available to general practice staff improving their ability to identify the tobacco consumption of patients and those who would benefit from brief advice delivered by a trained healthcare professional.
  • Improved national data standards on tobacco use would give commissioners a lever to make tobacco dependence a key priority.
  • Reinforce that helping patients to quit smoking is the business of everyone working in healthcare.

The survey, which closes on Friday 17th February can be accessed HERE
